  • Melinda K. Holman of Holman Automotive Named Regional Board Chair for United Way

Posted on 7/20/2015 by Ms. Natalie Janis of United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey

Melinda K. Holman, Chairman of Holman Automotive, has been named chair of the regional Board of Directors for United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey (UWGPSNJ). Holman will lead the regional board for a two-year term and succeeds Lon Greenberg, Chairman of the Board of UGI Corporation, who served as chair from 2013-2015.

  • United Way and Greater Philly Cares Merge to Bolster Volunteer Service in Merger

    Sunday, April 22, 2012 12:00 AM

Posted on 4/18/2012 by Ms. Jill Michal of United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey

This is a region committed to service. With more than 1 million volunteers serving 100 million hours each year, the dedication is clear. At United Way, we help people by giving, advocating and volunteering.
In support of the volunteer part of that effort, we recently finalized a merger with Greater Philadelphia Cares, together becoming a stronger, more unified community organization. In Greater Philadelphia Cares, we saw a like-minded mission that could bolster our efforts with strong relationships and powerful programs.
By coming together, we truly feel that we will be better able to serve the community, providing meaningful volunteer opportunities for individuals, community groups and corporations alike through the newly-formed Community Action Center. Our goal is to connect the “want” of volunteers to the needs of the community.
United Way feels strongly that collaboration and synergies among non-profits are an important way that we can make an even stronger impact in the community and increase nonprofits’ effectiveness and efficiency; which in the end, means that our donors’ investments are used most effectively.

Posted on 1/4/2012 by Mr. Christopher Redding Murray of United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 3, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania and Greater Philadelphia Cares have signed an agreement to merge, effective January 1, 2012. This merger of missions will provide meaningful volunteer and community engagement opportunities for individuals, community groups and corporations alike throughout the region.

As a result of the merger, United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania will form the Community Action Center, which will engage and mobilize individuals in support of service, as well as promote community involvement, throughout Greater Philadelphia. The Center will also provide a seamless connection through which the nonprofit sector can provide volunteer opportunities and volunteers can connect to important issues and needs in their communities.

"We know this partnership will only serve to strengthen the culture of volunteerism that is ingrained in our region," said Jill Michal, president and CEO, United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania. "Together, we'll be better equipped to connect the 'want' of volunteers to the real needs of the region, mobilizing this powerful force to drive real impact in our community."

All members of Greater Philadelphia Cares' Board of Directors have been invited to serve on United Way's Civic Engagement Vision Council, which oversees the organization's civic engagement work, and will help the organization determine the expansion of existing programs, and the development of new programs, moving forward. GPC Board Chair Erica Atwood will also serve as member of UWSEPA's Community Impact Strategy Committee, which oversees all of UWSEPA's community investments.

"For close to 20 years, Greater Philadelphia Cares has played an important role in connecting volunteers to opportunities throughout the Philadelphia region," said Erica Atwood, Specialist, External Affairs & Community Engagement, Office of the Mayor; Chair, Board of Directors, Greater Philadelphia Cares. "We know that this role will only be enhanced and strengthened by partnering with an organization as community-minded as United Way."
