Join the Young Professionals Council at WHYY for its “Unplugged” event featuring Pennsylvania House Speaker Joanna McClinton. Speaker McClinton will openly discuss with members of YPC the factors that attract young professionals to live, work, raise their families, and thrive in the Greater Philadelphia region. Bring plenty of business cards and be ready to expand your professional network while engaging with fellow young professionals in the region!
As a state lawmaker, McClinton has made history three times. First in 2018, when she became the first woman and the first African American elected as House Democratic Caucus Chair, and again in 2020 when she was the first woman elected House Democratic Leader in the institution’s 244-year history. In 2023, McClinton was elected Speaker of the Pennsylvania House – the first woman to serve in that position in the nation’s oldest legislature. As a lifelong resident of southwest Philadelphia, Joanna McClinton developed a passion for serving her community during her internship with WDAS, a local music radio station. As a young community leader, Joanna studied political science and leadership in global understanding at La Salle University, where she became both a student leader and a local neighborhood tutor. McClinton is a minister who holds an undergraduate degree from La Salle University and a law degree from Villanova University.
