The New American Airlines: Clearer Skies

American Airlines

Recognizing the potential benefits that a larger, more financially stable airline could have on both national and regional economies, American Airlines and US Airways joined forces in late 2013 to form the American Airlines Group (American). Although it has been just under a year since the merger became official, the upside — especially in greater Philadelphia — is already clear: consumers of all types now enjoy improved air travel options. The stronger airline has helped create a stronger economy, and more capacity has allowed American to make an even bigger economic impact on the region's communities and businesses.

The Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership Seminar — Exploring the Watershed Agreement with Far Reaching Implications

On Thursday, October 2, 2014, the BABC of Greater Philadelphia hosted the first educational seminar offered in this region about a timely and important policy topic — the Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership (TTIP) — the world's largest free trade agreement. The TTIP aims to create jobs and growth by removing quantitative and regulatory barriers to trade and commerce between the EU and the US, making it easier for businesses and consumers to buy and sell goods and services between the two regions. This game-changing agreement, if successful, could establish new global trading rules and standards that could help both sides of the Atlantic maintain dominance in an increasingly competitive global economy. Panelists traveled from Washington DC and Harrisburg to present the issues that are currently being hotly debated in Washington DC and Brussels.

Inis Nua: History, Awards, This Season, and the Future

Written by: Marina Kazakidis, BABC Coordinator and Junior at Temple University

Inis Nua means “New Island” in the Irish Language. Founder and Artistic Director Tom Reing explained the name is derived from his travels to the United Kingdom. Inis Nua is recognized for translating old world nostalgia into modern day theater here in the US. Inis Nua’s mission is to produce contemporary, provocative plays from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales that reflect the cultures' current lifestyle in such a way that audiences find the same connections with plays now as they did with those from decades and centuries ago. This local theater company works with Irish and UK playwrights to bring Philly audiences new plays from across the pond. Having opened its doors in 2004, Inis Nua has grown into a remarkable theater company that, most recently, boasts numerous “Outstanding” Awards for: Overall Production of a Musical, Direction of a Musical, Leading Actress in a Musical, and Music Direction, as well as the June and Steve Wolfson Award for an Evolving Theatre Company given at the 2014 Barrymore Awards For Excellence in Theater.

MIND THE GAP

There are many similarities between the US and the UK, so many that sometimes we forget the cultures are really quite distinct. Those differences, when explored, can be witty and interesting. This new section of the BABC Newsletter highlights these nuances.

Do you have a “Mind the Gap” story you'd like to share — a time when you were misunderstood or did not understand what was being said or happening around you? If so, email babc@greaterphilachamber.com and we will feature your story in our next newsletter's “Mind the Gap” section.

This issue's “Mind the Gap” feature explores the differences between eating out in America and Great Britain. The holiday season is a time to frequent restaurants and dine with family and friends. So, while you are still feeling satisfied from the myriad of gluttonous celebrations enjoyed in the recent past, perhaps you will relate to this amusing comparison.
