Gary Marshall
President
British American Business Council of Greater Philadelphia

Dear BABC Members and Friends,

As our fiscal year draws to a close I am pleased to report we have had a remarkable twelve months. The BABC participated in a dozen valuable programs, including both inbound and outbound trade missions. We were honored to join Mayor Michael A. Nutter on his first official (and very well received) trade mission to the UK, and to welcome UK company delegates to our region as well.

Currently we are offering our “Brit Invasion 2014” series of events featuring British themed activities throughout the area. We hope you will join us for our two final programs this year: on April 30th the BABC Young Professionals Group is presenting a discussion about social media and marketing, and on May 20th we are hosting a seminar about the economics and implications of the World Cup in collaboration with several international groups.

I would also like to draw your attention to a very important BABC initiative — the Annual Membership Directory. Please ensure your company listing is up-to-date, and consider advertising in the 2014 – 2015 Directory — the region's premier guide for international business. We look forward to your participation, and as always, thank you for your support.

Sincerely,
Gary Marshall
President, British American Business Council of

Insights from PwC's 17th Global CEO Survey — Increased Optimism — but Big Changes Ahead…

By Michael Swanick, Global Pharmaceutical & Life Sciences leader, PwC

Michael Swanick

The global economic recovery continues to be fragile, but with immediate pressures easing. CEOs are feeling more optimistic and gradually switching from survival mode to growth mode.

That's the primary conclusion of latest PwC Annual Global CEO Survey — the 17th we've conducted. It shows that the changes CEOs are making within their organizations now have less to do with sheltering from economic headwinds and more to do with preparing for the future.

The number of CEOs who believe that the global economy will improve over the next 12 months has doubled to 44%, compared to the previous year. Only 7% of CEOs, compared with 28% last year, think that things will get worse in the year ahead. CEOs are also feeling better about their own companies' prospects, with 39% now very confident of revenue growth in 2014.

But CEOs are also challenged to decipher some very mixed signals about the global economy. Last year, the advanced economies were struggling, while the emerging economies surged. This year, the advanced economies are mending, while growth in some of the emerging economies is decelerating.

HUMAN INTEREST FEATURE

BABC Member's Legacy: Toby Wallace

In July 2013, the British American Business Council of Greater Philadelphia lost a dear member and friend, Toby Wallace, Senior Relationship Manager, Endowments & Foundations at Aberdeen Asset Management. Toby was an active member who helped launch and lead the BABC's Young Professionals Group (YPG). Exactly two years ago our human interest feature article was about Toby and his remarkable journey crossing the Atlantic Ocean unsupported in a specially designed boat, Titan. Rowing day and night, Toby and his team of seven other men completed the rigorous crossing, narrowly missing the record of 32 days. Titan was recently re-named the Toby Wallace in his honor for its next record attempt — which was just completed in March 2014 and it now holds the record for the second fastest crossing in history. Auspiciously, the rededication ceremony took place on Toby's birthday. Click here to view pictures of the newly named vessel.

The 2014 crew of the Toby Wallace raised money for the Kirsten Scott Memorial Trust (an organization the BABC has donated to in the past) in support of Toby's fundraising efforts — the very cause for which he was cycling the length of Britain the day the tragic accident took his life. The renaming of the boat and the subsequent crossing is just one of many examples of how, even posthumously, Toby continues to help those in need.
