  • Young Friendsgiving: Philadelphia’s Entrepreneurship, Food, & Culture from around the World

    Monday, November 14, 2016 12:00 AM

Posted on 10/31/2016 by Ms. Margaret Hasani of World Affairs Council of Philadelphia

From the Middle East to South America, from Scandinavia to West Africa, from Germany and France to the Philippines and Japan—Philadelphia is becoming the next great “foodie” city.

While New York and Los Angeles have been known as foodie meccas for decades, Philadelphia is no longer only for the cheesesteak lovers. New restaurants with cultural influences from all over the world seem to be popping up left and right, and many of these new locales are run by bright, young, rockstar chefs who are changing the scene in Philly.

Join the World Affairs Council to meet several of these young chefs and hear about their exciting stories. You’ll get the chance to “visit” Malaysia, Israel, and Mexico in this food-tour of the world, without ever having to leave the city of Philadelphia.

  • The Great Trade Debate: A Front-line Perspective

    Thursday, September 29, 2016 12:00 AM

Posted on 9/23/2016 by Ms. Margaret Hasani of World Affairs Council of Philadelphia

International trade has become one of the hottest issues in this year’s presidential campaign and, somewhat oddly, an issue on which the two candidates seem closer than many others – with both stressing what they argue as harmful effects of trade on the U.S. standard of living.

In addition to it being a national issue, trade is also a force in the Philadelphia regional economy. As Philadelphia is positioning itself to dramatically increase exports by 2020, Michael Ducker, President & CEO of FedEx Freight and Immediate Past Chair of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors joins the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia and Fox School of Business at Temple University to explore the complexities of international trade and its benefits to American businesses of all sizes.

Location: Marriott Courtyard, 21 N. Juniper St., Philadelphia

    Time: 5:30 p.m. Reception; 6 p.m. Program; 7:15 p.m. Conclusion

  • 65th Anniversary and International Statesman Award

Posted on 3/31/2014 by Ms. Hayley J. Boyle of World Affairs Council of Philadelphia

In April 1949, a group of visionary Philadelphians created the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, dedicated to the proposition that, “In a Democracy, agreement is not essential, participation is.” Their organization became and remains one of the leading platforms in America’s marketplace of ideas.

Join us in celebrating the first 65 years of this legacy of thought leadership as the Council presents its highest honor, the International Statesman Award, to H.E. Sebastián Piñera, former President of the Republic of Chile. The Council is recognizing President Piñera on the occasion of Chile’s emergence as the first “fully developed” country in Latin America—a milestone of global significance—and in view of the critical economic relationship between Chile and the Ports of Philadelphia and Wilmington.
