Governance of a comprehensive compensation program for the executive staff of a nonprofit or education organization rests with the Board of Directors. Board members are tasked with attracting, retaining, evaluating and compensating its key employees but, many times, members of the Board have little or no direct experience with compensation matters. The laws and regulations surrounding nonprofit executive compensation are also complex, adding another challenging layer to the Board's task. In this session, BDO will highlight the critical role and activities that must be accomplished to minimize risks associated with improper pay practices and share our experience in terms of 'best' and 'worst' practices observed in some organizations.
