  • Don't Miss the Exclusive Exhibition Opening Party at the Barnes Foundation

    Friday, January 24, 2014 12:00 AM

Posted on 1/17/2014 by Ms. Chermaina Roundtree of The Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia

Yinka Shonibare MBE: Magic Ladders - On Friday, January 24, from 6-9 p.m., meet the artist and enjoy the Latin/classical sound of Luigi Mazzocchi & The Pagode Project, then dance the night away to DJ Rich Medina. Tickets are $25 and include collection and exhibition access.
A British artist of Nigerian descent, Shonibare's work uses Dutch wax fabric produced in Europe but prized in Africa to explore history, culture and identity with sly humor. The exhibition's centerpiece is Magic Ladders, the first Barnes commission since Matisse's The Dance in 1930. The children climbing the ladders with rungs of books evoke the idea of empowerment through knowledge.
